Senior fraud is a serious problem that affects millions of elderly people every year. Unfortunately, many cases of elder fraud go unreported due to shame, fear, or confusion about what to do next. In this blog post, we'll provide you with the information you need to know about reporting elder fraud, including where to get help and what to do if you suspect that someone you know has been a victim.
If you or someone you know has been a victim of elder fraud, it's important to get help right away. Here are some of the hotlines and groups you can contact for assistance.
- In Pennsylvania there is a statewide elder abuse hotline 1-800-490-8505, which will connect to the local Area Agency on Aging. The hotline is operational 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
- Adult Protective Services (APS): APS is a state-run agency that investigates reports of elder abuse and neglect where you can report Medicaid and welfare https://www.dhs.pa.gov/about/Fraud-And-Abuse/Pages/Adult-Protective-Services.aspx
- National Elder Fraud Hotline 1-833–FRAUD–11 (or 833–372–8311) service is available Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET
- AARP Fraud Watch Network: 1-877-908-3360 toll-free service is available Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET
- Federal Trade Commission (FTC): The FTC has a website dedicated to protecting seniors from scams. You can use this website to report a scam, get information on common scams, and learn how to avoid fraud. https://reportfraud.ftc.gov/#/
- serveourseniors.org Provides nationwide resources for seniors.
